Overview

Newly established recruitment company DerventioUK commissioned Vertigo Information Systems to create a brand identity and to design and build a new website. The new identity was to involve the design of a new logo and branding to be used on their new website and other pieces of business stationary.

The purpose of the website is to enable job seekers to register all their personal details, their education/employment experience and the type of work they're looking for. Provided that they are successful after going through the vetting process, candidates then become active workers and are eligible to be put forward for work assignments.

Development

The DerventioUK site was designed and developed from the beginning to be as simple and intuitive to use as possible, for candidates to sign up and complete the registration process.

On the first screen of the homepage on the right hand side, site visitors are greeted with the headline:

"Looking For A Job? Start Your Registration Today"

Underneath the headline are two boxes inviting potential candidates to begin their registration by asking them to enter their name and email address. If somebody decides to enter and submit their initial personal details; they are then taken to the main sign up page. After completing a few more details on the initial sign up page, the main registration phase begins.

In order to fully register, a candidate must complete 12 steps. An abridged description of the registration process involves candidates registering basic details about themselves, previous education/employment experience and address history. Later steps ask if a candidate is looking for work as a driver. If so, what type of driving work? Candidates are also required to complete a basic English test, a medical questionnaire and declare if they have any unspent criminal convictions. Step 12, the final step, simply asks a candidate how they would like to be contacted. Once a candidate has completed the main registration process, they are redirected to the candidate dashboard page.

Following the main registration phase, candidates must next provide evidence of their address, their right to work in the UK (if from oversees) and N.I. number. If they have applied for a driving job, they must provide evidence of a full UK driving licence and any other driving qualifications necessary for the role. All evidential documents can be uploaded in either Microsoft Word, PDF or JPG image format. After a candidate’s personal details, their right to work in the UK and appropriate qualifications have all been successfully vetted, they then become an active worker and can be recommended for work assignments.

When a suitable job or assignment has been found for an active worker, they are emailed a Key Information Document (KID) listing all the details about the job and associated terms and conditions. If a candidate decides to accept the job offer, they must agree to the terms and conditions of the contract. The job KID can either be accepted by clicking on a link in the KID email or by signing back into their dashboard area on the site and accepting it there.

Initial Launch and Refinements

When the DerventioUK site was initially launched in July 2021, there were originally 9 steps in the registration process which all candidates would complete without any issues. Problems would arise however, when candidates were then expected to complete the compulsory basic English test and medical questionnaire. If they were applying for a driving job the Driving Licence Processing Form would be required as well. If left until after the initial registration process, it would then be harder to get some candidates to go back and complete the Driving Licence Processing Form. Therefore, it was decided to incorporate these additional sections in to the main registration process, increasing the number of steps from 9 to 12.

Project Results

From a branding perspective, DerventioUK was a success. The burnt orange colour used in the logo design made it distinctive and stand out. The branding and logo were then used on business stationary such as business cards, letter headings and complementary slips.

Choosing to incorporate the basic English test, medical questionnaire and driving licence processing form into the main registration process proved to be the right decision. It saved time and staff no longer had to chase up candidates to complete the additional forms.

The overall project was a success and there are plans in the future to further develop the site’s functionality.
